Villa Description

See the best of Renaissance architecture and modern Italian design at villa Opera in Florence. Set in a palazzo that was built in 1420 by Brunelleschi, the three-bedroom villa was carved out of the palazzo’s theater in a 2012 renovation. While the space’s high beamed ceilings, elegant windows and even its pulleys for theatrical scenes have been preserved, the historic envelope has been filled with a mix of treasured antiques and new classics of contemporary design.

On your way to the villa, pass by the palazzo’s courtyard, decorated with majolicas by Andrea della Robbia, neoclassical columns, antique marbles and Renaissance-era ironworks. Once inside Opera, a heating system, air conditioning and video security ensure your comfort, while a surround-sound system, bar and Wi-Fi access are perfect for entertaining. While the restaurants of Florence are at your doorstep, you can order in from the ground-floor restaurant at extra cost if you’d prefer.

Spread across two levels, the villa creates a loft-like feel in a traditional space. Beneath the beamed ceilings, traditional arched windows and walls covered in 18th-century frescoes, you’ll find clean-lined contemporary pieces like a Tulip table and chairs, sleek black leather sectional, and Eames lounger. The dining area’s tufted red and black leather seats, arc lamp and minimalist white shelving continue the modern feel, as does the mirror-lined fully equipped kitchen.

Each of villa Opera’s three bedrooms has a queen bed, en-suite bathroom, flat-screen TV and air conditioning. Neutral-toned bedding and streamlined beds and nightstands create a restful atmosphere, while cowhide armchairs and dark, dramatic tiled bathrooms ensure the spaces aren’t short on style. One of the bedrooms is decorated with frescoes of scenes from antiquity and has its own seating area with tufted leather sofa.

The villa is located in the center of Florence, putting the city’s museums, galleries, shopping and dining just minutes away. If you’d like to learn more about local culture, wine tastings and cooking lessons can be arranged at extra cost. If you’d like to explore the region, San Gimignano, Pisa and Volterra are all within day-trip distance. It’s a 75-minute drive to Siena and a 240-minute drive to Rome.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Surrounded by hills, Florence rises on the banks of the Arno River. One of the greatest art centers of Italy, Florence is home to the Accademia, where you can view Michelangelo's "David," as well as the Uffizi gallery, arguably the most important art gallery in the world.

Tour the cathedral with its pink, white and green marble façade and marvel at its remarkable Duomo by Brunelleschi and the gold Paradise door of the Baptistery. Continue to the Piazza della Signoria, the political heart of Florence since the 1300s. Then stroll by the charming jewelry shops of Ponte Vecchio. There is nothing like enjoying a morning coffee and truffle panini at the celebrated Procacci bar before setting out for a serious morning of shopping on Via Tournabuoni. Take a day to scour the Gucci, Armani and Yves Saint Laurent outlets in the outskirts of the city.

For those wishing to explore some of Tuscany's other treasures, one of the best ways to see the region is by automobile. The small fortress cities are within easy driving distance of one another, and each offers its own special appeal, from the picturesque medieval cities of San Gimignano and Volterra to Pisa with its Leaning Tower and Lucca with its impressive Renaissance walls. Visit seaside resorts like Viareggio, Elba, and Forte de Marmi. Do not forget other worthwhile Chianti sights such as the wine villages of Castellina, Radda and Volpaia.

Siena is also not to be missed. Siena is a beautifully preserved medieval city, constructed of checkerboard brick, and crowned by its Duomo. It was the seat of the Ghibellines who often crossed swords with the Florentine Guelfs during the 13th century. Other highlights of Siena include the beautiful Piazza del Campo where on July 2nd and August 16th of each year the famous Palio takes place.
